Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located at the area near Sanmentan of Xiashanxu Village, Yudu County, Jiangxi Province.

It was named by Geological Team of Jiangxi.


Lithology and Thickness

Mudstone, sandstone. Lower part of the Sanmentan Formation is composed of yellow calcareous mudstone and grayish-white feldspar quartz sandstone.

Upper part consists of grayish-white, grayish-green, purplish-red, and yellowish-green coarse-grained sandstone, fine-grained sandstone and siltstone.

The thickness is 455 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The unit is in conformable contact with the underlying Zhongpeng Fm.

Upper contact

The unit is in conformable contact with the overlying Lower Carboniferous.

Fossils

Lower part of the Sanmentan Formation contains brachiopoda Yunnanella synplicata, Y. hunanensis, Cyrtospirifer cf. sinensis, Tenticospirifer sp.

Upper part of the formation yields flora Leptophloeum rhombicum, Sublepidodendron mirabile, S. wushiense, Lepidodtrobus grabaui.
